From knowledge to action

The Action Component is a 21 million Euro grant-making facility managed by IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) in the frame of the BIOPAMA (Biodiversity and Protected Areas Management) Programme. BIOPAMA is an initiative of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) Group of States financed by the European Union’s 11th European Development Fund.

The Action Component is addressing priorities for action, supporting activities on the ground for strengthening the management effectiveness and governance of protected and conserved areas. By adopting a landscape approach, these actions will also contribute to enhancing the local livelihoods through sustainable use of the natural resources and ecosystem services, as well as increasing the resilience to the impacts of climate change.

The overall aim of the BIOPAMA programme is to contribute to improving the long-term conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity and natural resources in Africa, Caribbean and Pacific regions in protected areas and surrounding communities. The implementation of the Action Component is one of the major deliverables of the BIOPAMA Programme, together with the consolidation of the Regional Observatories for Protected Areas and Biodiversity and their Reference Information Systems (RIS).

The BIOPAMA Regional Observatories and the RIS provide valuable information, knowledge and data on the protected and conserved areas in the ACP countries, which have a key role in highlighting where actions on the ground are needed.

Priorities for actions

The BIOPAMA Action Component is a grant-making facility that will fund small and medium grants for targeted actions, by enabling protected area agencies, NGOs, local communities and other key conservation stakeholders to effectively address identified priorities for actions in Africa, the Caribbean and the Pacific. The BIOPAMA Regional Observatories for Protected Areas and Biodiversity support data collection, analysis, monitoring and reporting. The data and information generated by these Regional Observatories help identify where actions on the ground are necessary to improve the protected areas status and their conservation outcomes. Please consult the identified priorities for actions presented below and ensure that any application submitted as response to the BIOPAMA Action Component calls for proposal address one of these priorities.
